Hot water - Roof mounted solar hot water services are made by a variety of local companies.  These units attract a range of Government concessions to encourage their use.  Be aware that the efficiency of the solar collectors is very important to the energy savings you will achieve.   At Urban Green Living, we can advise you which solar hot water units are the most efficient and provide a quotation for supply and installation.

Heating - Specialist solar hot water systems can provide hot water for domestic use and can assist heating via a hydronic heating system.  High efficiency collectors can be individually mounted or installed as a single integrated panel directly into the roof.  Heat is collected via these panels and stored in a large insulated tank containing exchanger coils.  These coils allow the transfer of heat to the domestic hot water piping and the hydronic heating system (slab coils, radiator panels, swimming pool).   At Urban Green Living, we can design, supply and install a solar heating and hot water system to suit your needs.

Power - Photovoltaic (PV) power can be generated from roof mounted solar electricity panels.   Design and installation services are even provided by energy companies.   For urban environments these include grid-interactive systems that return excess power back to the power grid, and draw from the grid on overcast days and overnight.

An interesting development is Origin Energy's Sliver technology enabling production of thin, flexible PV film which utilises 90% less of the crystalline silicon of conventional PV cells.  This should significantly reduce the cost of cells.  With the commencement in December 2003 of the construction of a manufacturing plant in Adelaide, designed to service the world market, there is a real hope that the use of PV cells integrated directly into building surfaces will become more viable.
