There is much debate about the safety of synthetic paints versus natural paints, and this area is continually evolving.
The differences in the types of 'natural' paints are significant and complex, making decisions for the consumer a difficult task. Urban Green Living promotes the use of paints based on products sourced from plant and naturally occurring materials.
The reasons we support 'natural' paints include:
- All raw materials are listed on product labels and data sheets, so any potential allergic condition can be predetermined. Manufacturers of conventional paints only need to declare materials required by law on their Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), obtained by request. MSDS sheets are required for any product which contains substances known or suspected of being carcinogenic, mutagenic or posing other significant health risk.
- Emissions from products of naturally derived materials, such as resins, waxes and oils, tend to break down faster in the environment than synthetic materials.
- The "embodied energy" (ie total energy expended in manufacture) is about half that of conventional paints.
